Isometrix and February’s Goals/Resolutions

I had gotten so used to my schedule that I didn’t check yesterday and just did Dynamix plus Total Synergy in the morning. Then this morning I glance and notice the schedule says “Transition Week”…oops. I missed Isometrix! 

Don’t worry, I did it this morning. Wooie, my balance is awful (I think I’ve mentioned this before) and I have a lot of work to do on core strength. This routine is all about balance and isometric discipline. Planks holding up one arm and leg for a minute. Downward dog while grabbing your outside leg with the opposite hand and then extend your other leg for 45 seconds…And then there’s the “inner balance” move that should be easy – you just have to stand on one foot and lift the other for 45 seconds (Or a minute?). Easy peasy, right? Oh, forgot the important part – close your eyes. Try it…

I’m going to feel that tomorrow.

Onto next month’s resolutions…

1.) Adding 12 miles of running a week. Monday-Saturday I’ll add a 2 mile run before my P90X3 workout as a warm up.  

2.) No more than 2 alcoholic drinks when I go out. I’m going to try to limit this to twice a week as well…we’ll see on that one, I’ve given out a bunch of rain checks during Dry January.

3.) Continuing with vegan and gluten free eating at home. I’m going to be a little more flexible when I go out to restaurants, but I haven’t had any rashes or reactions to food this month and that’s been a relief!

Ok well I’m heading to bed – here’s a random glimpse into my life outside of the pursuit of healthy habits: I’m binge watching Veronica Mars with my roommate because she had never seen it and was mildly interested after I was geeking out about the upcoming movie. She’s completely addicted now. Thank you Amazon Prime.

Sunday Funday

How has everyone been doing on their 2014 resolutions? I decided to make monthly resolutions instead of jumping into a year’s worth of commitment. I tend to fail those.

I’ve got less than a week left on my January resolutions: no alcohol and vegan/gluten free eating. It’s gone pretty well. I have only slipped up on the vegan eating once, I tried the Vanilla Shakeology when it came in the mail the other day. But other than that I’ve been doing well.
I’m thinking of February goals…continuing on my P90X3 program for sure and thinking of capping my alcohol intake at 2 drinks if out and about, and only one glass of wine if I want something with lunch or dinner. Might add something else to that but haven’t quite figured it out yet.
Random question(s) of the day: Do you like dates? If so, what’s your favorite variety? I’ve been really addicted to Fancy California Medjool’s, have been buying them weekly at my neighborhood farmer’s market and eating them almost daily with pecans or almonds. Such a delicious dessert!

Day 15 already, wow! And the Dynamix review

Well I did something to my arm…I was so excited and feeling so tough that even though my arms requested to stop doing pull ups, I just kept on keepin’ on. And boy was that dumb.

So that was Thursday – and Friday morning I awoke at 4am because I stretched out my arms. OW! I promptly got up and took some ibuprofen to help my tender, overworked, and ANGRY biceps. I managed to fall back asleep but spent all day trying not to fully extend my arms, especially my left. Saturday was thankfully better – I had invited a couple of friends over to sample my tasty Shakeology and do Hip Hop Abs Cardio (which is not just a fun workout but also HILARIOUS and I recommend doing it with your friends, Dawg) and didn’t have to cancel. And then, since I was feeling a bit better but not nearly 100% and had decided to skip CVX the day before because I didn’t want to make any quick movements, I decided to not do The Warrior but make up CVX. Which worked out well, I was only using a 4 lb weight so my arms were ok and I think it helped loosen up the muscles a bit.

Unfortunately I noticed a little swelling in my left bicep later in the day and then yesterday….ha, well the pain was totally gone! But both my left bicep and forearm had swollen 3/4 of an inch larger than my right arm. My left arm felt solid, and my elbow had puffed out as well. So I iced and elevated and it’s a marginally better today. Actually today there’s just a mass of  ..fluid moving around my forearm. Fun fun.

It’s really not bothering me much, I’m just going to lay off pull ups and pushups this week, maybe do some light arm exercises with my resistance bands but nothing strenuous. (and obviously if it’s still wonky in a few days I’ll go to my doc!)

So, I finally did do Dynamix! And I’m happy I had skipped it last Sunday. Not that it’s difficult, I was just so beat by the end of the first week that I’m glad I took the day off. It’s leg lifts and stretching and would be an excellent 30 minute warm up or cool down. It moves quickly and is light on your upper body, but definitely will help with flexibility and balance.

With that said, in the future weeks I’m going to add it onto another day and leave one day for rest (as I did this week, it just happened to be Friday instead of Sunday!). This is absolutely a routine I’ll keep doing well after my 90 days is up.

Ok I’ll leave you with a random thought and photo: Even though I rather enjoy this warm winter here in SoCal, I hope we get rain soon to stop the outbreak of wildfires before they cause devastating damage. Plus it’s quake-weather and I just had a lovely photo framed and hung above my couch that I don’t want to have to repair.

P90X3 Week 2: Mid-Week Check in

Thought I’d given up, huh? Nope, not me – I’ve figured out how to stick to short term sacrifices in order to get where I want to be fitness-wise: By being very vocal about what I’m doing! I’m posting daily on my fb Coach page (www.facebook.com/CoachMelissaMooney), sharing with friends and co-workers, and telling my roommate to yell at me if I’m just slothing it up on the couch when I could be doing something productive!

This week has been both easier and more difficult – my legs and core are not feeling as exhausted but I did finally receive my pull up bar from Amazon so my arms and back are getting more focus. Oh, and the bar is actually a tower because I don’t trust my old apartment building’s door frames. It’s quite tall, luckily I have high ceilings – As my roommate so perfectly said: “I’ve always wanted a sky scraper in the living room!” Ha, I promise I’ll move it come April (and hide it in my room when we have friends over).

But I’m down 4 pounds since January 1st, so that’s super encouraging and motivating – I think the combination of daily Shakeology, P90X3, and Dry/Gluten Free/Vegan month is really working 🙂 I’m feeling fantastic and a few people have complimented that I have a “glow!” I’ll take it and keep pushing!

Recipe—Buffalo Cauliflower Bites

I’m going to make a gluten free version of this sometime soon (maybe for the Super Bowl?) – Yum, these look DELICIOUS!

I am a girl who loves her boneless buffalo wings, just not all the calories that come with the batter fried chicken. This is a fabulous adaptation of the classic American appetizer. My husband isn’t really a fan of buffalo chicken but he really enjoyed these to my surprise. To be honest, the two of us finished off the entire batch over some Sunday football and I was guilt free! This is a really great appetizer that is not only quick but incredibly easy. Enjoy!

INGREDIENTS
1 head of cauliflower, cut into bite size pieces
1/2 c buttermilk
1/2 c flour
1 tsp garlic salt
1/2 c buffalo sauce (I love Frank’s Red Hot Buffalo Wings Sauce!)
1 tbsp butter, melted

GARNISHES
bleu cheese dressing
celery and/or carrots

Day 7: Dynamix…or rest day for me

I told myself since it was the first week I would do Dynamix instead of taking today as a recovery day. Dynamix is the stretch ‘workout’ which would feel fantastic for my body — but my body is exhausted and put in a request to be inactive.

In retrospect, I probably shouldn’t have added that extra 90 minute workout yesterday…But it was a gorgeous day, nature was calling, and I got to catch up with a friend I hadn’t seen in a few weeks so – Worth It!

I’ll save the Dynamix review for next Sunday 🙂

Day 6: The Warrior

Ahhhh, Saturday 🙂  A day to sleep in, relax, day drink, and eat out for brunch and dinner. Oh wait…no, that’s how I got so out of shape (and was spending so much money!)…THIS Saturday starts a new trend: Wake up and do whatever Tony Horton tells me to on whichever P90x3 workout I’m on, hike or go for a walk/run on the beach, invite a friend over for smoothies pre- or post-workout, and just be productive in general (My car would like me to take it in for an oil change and new rear break pads. We’ll see, Car, we’ll see).

This second Healthy Habits Saturday started with P90X3: The Warrior. It incorporates both resistance and cardio and was originally created by Tony Horton as a workout to do with our troops while he was visiting them at bases throughout the world. That’s very cool – I like how much this company, Beachbody, does for the military. I’m a “make peace, not war” kinda gal, but I fully support and respect the men and women in our armed forces.

But back to the workout – you know it’s going to be difficult and intense since Tony’s out there leading soldiers in it! The Warrior is four sets of four exercises – each set starts with an upper body move, then cardio, then core, finished up with a plyometric leg exercise. Then we have that blessed 30 second break 😉

I did follow with the modifier on this one – I didn’t start til a little after 9am and was trying to be considerate of the neighbors below me. Old apartment buildings are not the best for jumping all around. Well, it’s fine if you’re on the top floor, as I am, but not so much for the unfortunate people who have to listen to the creaking and pounding. I don’t care too much about it at 7am through the week because they’re probably not hanging out in their living room but who knows at 9:30am on Saturday.

Ok, well my friend Ashley just got here and we’re off to hike Runyon Canyon after a tasty Vegan Chocolate Shakeology and PB2 smoothie 🙂
